One of the best pieces of advice you can get for a long, happy, enjoyable life is to live day by day. In other words, live one day at a time; don't worry about anything in the future or past beyond twenty-four hours. This is, indeed, excellent advice, but it may give you the impression that you shouldn't plan for, and think about, the future. You should. Setting goals for the future is important, and the process of setting goals, becoming enthusiastic and excited about them, and seeing them accomplished, will give you a tremendous feeling of happiness, just as living day by day will.
Goals are positive thoughts and enhance your happiness. What you shouldn't do is have anxiety about the future. Anxiety leads to negative thoughts and they should be avoided at all cost. In particular, don't spend time worrying about whether you will lose your job, or whether you'll have money or health problem somewhere down the road. Most of the things that people worry about never come to pass. Furthermore, don't spend a lot of time waiting for things to happen in the future. While you are waiting, life is passing by, and the precious moments you spent waiting will never come again. Happiness can't be contingent on anything; it has to happen now. Today is your most precious possession, and you should make the best of it.
In the same way, you shouldn't try to live in the past. Nostalgia for the past is natural; you were younger and perhaps more energetic. Looking back on your life can, however, lead to problems as you think about some of the mistakes you made, and how things could have been different. It's certainly alright to think briefly about the past -- savor it -- but don't dwell on it (and what you should have done differently). It's over and done with, and there's nothing you can do to change it. You can, however, learn from it, and you should.
So forget the future and past (beyond twenty-four hours). The only important thing now is today, and the things you have to get done today. If they're done well they will influence your future and perhaps make it better. But the important things is to live these twenty - four hours as if they were your last -- enjoy every moment of them, and you will have a happier life.
