Since the invention of vehicles, fewer children are walking to and from school, but with the push for our children to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle, walking is greatly encouraged. Therefore, if our children are using this method to get to and from school, the following suggestions may be helpful in keeping them safe.

Walk In Public Area

Encourage them to always use the pathways that most people uses and one that is cleared of trees, bushes etc. It may be easier for them to walk through someone's backyard or, a pathway that is hidden from the public's view, but they should not do this. If they find themselves in need of help, no one may be able to hear their cries for help.

Walk With Friends

If we will not be walking with them, it is best to make sure that they will be going with a trusted person. For one reason or another, some parents will allow their children to do this alone. Some parents may take them half way and allow them to do the next half on their own.

Although some of them may be of age to do this, it does not mean that they should be allowed to do it. It is best to make sure that they are doing so with someone else, if not with us.

Learn From Little Red Ridding Hood

Recently, many authors have been changing, or perhaps giving many of the short stories, that some of us grew up with, a new twist. Therefore, the Little Red Riding Hood, who is mentioned here, is from the original story.

In the original, the little girl's Mom gave her a basket of goodies to take to her sick grandmother and among other things, she told her not to talk with strangers on her way to her grandma.

The little girl told her Mom okay and off she went. Then, what do you think she did, well, among other things, she talked to a stranger and the stranger was a wolf. Yes, although her Mom gave her stick instructions and she said okay, she still disobeyed.

Therefore, it is not enough for us to say, "my children know that they should not talk to strangers." We need to keep reinforcing this regularly.

If a stranger is looking for directions to a particular place, it is best for them to ask an adult and not our young children. Therefore, let us not encourage our young ones to stop if a stranger asks them for directions, or asks them to help them to find a lost pet or for any other reasons.

Additionally, reinforcing the fact that someone around their age, whom they do not know, is also a stranger.
