Retirement and Saving
At some point in life we need to consider what savings do we need for retirement. Have we been the squirrel, diligently saving for retirement or have we been the grasshopper, enjoying the moment without a thought of how we would live in retirement. This the old story about summer and winter, where the squirrel will be able to survive the winter whilst the grasshopper will not, due to their actions during the summer.
Whilst retirement may seem to be far away, it will come quicker than you think. The earlier you can begin to save for retirement, the bigger nest egg you will have and retirement will be much more financially easier. It is never too late to start and never too early to start as well. The important thing is to start. Your retirement savings should be based on the goals and to achieve these goals you need to plan, fortunately there is a lot of information available on how to achieve this. The first step is to set a retirement date goal.
This date will be a mixture of personal preference, current and projected state of your financial position, social security benefits and how they apply to you, and does your family have a history of living to very old age or not. Retirement income can be from many sources. There is the social security source and the beginning of this depends on when you were born. Access to funds from 401(k) can be another source, particularly look at whether there are any penalties in withdrawing early. Some people will have other tax advantageous investments, such as 403(b) or IRA.
There are the investments you made that can be a continual funding source based on returns from stock dividends or bonds interest or a one off lump sum if you sell your stock or your bond matures. Other employer pension plans, life insurance maturities, savings and also part-time employment during retirement. As a general rule you will need at least ten times you final average salary to enable your retirement to be financially secure.
