It is hard being an Arizona football. Of the 21 schools that are part of the Big Ten and Pac-10, the Wildcats are the only one that has never played in the Rose Bowl. Even lowly Indiana from the Big Ten has played in the Granddaddy of them all once. Arizona had come close several times, but has never been able to win the Pac-10 and reach the promised land of Pasadena on New Year's Day. After struggling for most of the decade to make any bowl game, 2009 was a banner season for Arizona. They had a chance to win that elusive conference championship late in the season, but could not hold a lead against Oregon at home.
The Oregon loss, however painful, did not overshadow an otherwise successful 8-5 season. The Wildcats also finished 6-3 in the Pac-10, but at 7-2 (had they held on against the Ducks) they would have been conference champions. Sophomore quarterback Nick Foles was a major reason for that success, and he will return in 2010 to give the Wildcats another chance at glory. Foles completed 260 passes for 2,486 yards and 19 touchdowns in his first season as a starter. He did not even take over as the full-time starter until the fourth game of the year at Oregon State.
Arizona began the season with a 19-6 victory over a very good Central Michigan team. The Chippewas had one of the most underrated offenses in the country this year, so it was a testament to Arizona's defense that they avoided the upset. A home win over Northern Arizona followed, but Arizona stumbled in its third game when the Wildcats visited Iowa. The Hawkeyes, who won the Orange Bowl, beat the Wildcats 27-17, so it was far from a bad loss.
Arizona then got a key win at Oregon State 37-32, but stumbled badly against a bad Washington team 36-33. Arizona held a late 33-28 lead over the Huskies, but Mason Foster returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown and the Huskies got a two-point conversion for the win with 2:37 left. Arizona shook off that disappointment and notched wins over Stanford (43-38), UCLA (27-13), and Washington State (48-7) to stay in the Pac-10 race. A 24-16 stumble at California hurt Arizona's chances, but because the rest of the conference was in disarray the Wildcats controlled their destiny when Oregon visited on November 21st.
Arizona led the Ducks 31-24 in the final minutes, but Ed Dickson caught an eight yard touchdown pass to send the game to overtime with six seconds left. The Wildcats then dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime 44-41. Now out of the Pac-10 race, Arizona finished the regular season with wins over Arizona State (20-17) and USC (21-17). That earned them a date with one of the best defensive teams in America against Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl. Nebraska showed why they were one of the best defensive teams too. The Cornhuskers pitched a 33-0 shutout in thoroughly dominating Arizona.

1999 Rose Bowl $71.7 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The 1999 Rose Bowl was the 85th Rose Bowl game and was played on Friday January 1, 1999 at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California. It was a college football bowl game. The game featured Wisconsin beating UCLA by a score of 3831. Ron Dayne of Wisconsin was named the Rose Bowl Player of the Game. He tied a modern Rose Bowl record with four touchdowns. This was the first year that the Rose Bowl became part of the Bowl Championship Series, ending a a longstanding agreement between the Big Ten and the West Representative. The UCLA Bruins were en route to a BCS Championship Game with a #2 ranking until a horrendous ghack against a mediocre Miami Hurricanes team in a rescheduled lateseason game exposed their defensive problems and dropped their ranking, so the traditional matchup occurred. This was the first year that the game was branded with corporate sponsorship. Unlike the other bowl games, the sponsor was not added to the title of the game, but instead as a presenter, so it became known as The Rose Bowl Game presented by ATT. Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 76 Publication Date: 2010/12/31 Language: English Dimensions: 6.00 x 9.02 x 0.18 inches |
