What is so special about the number seven? If you go into the business and lifestyle section of a book shop seven must be the number most widely used in the titles - "7 steps to ...." "Seven ways to ..." Why does it seem that seven is appearing so frequently in these book titles, management training programmes or even in blog posts- well here are seven reasons why the number seven is interesting:
1. Seven is a lucky number!
2. Seven is the fourth prime number;
3. There are reportedly seven virtues and seven deadly sins;
4. Common ladybirds have seven spots;
5. There are seven stellar objects visible with the naked eye Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn and there are seven stars in the Ursa Major constellation;
6. Seven hills of Rome and seven wonders of the ancient world;
7. There are lots of films with seven in the title - Seven, The Magnificent Seven, The Seven Year Itch, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and of course Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Well whilst it is a bit of fun, I sometimes use this exercise at the start of a training course or team building forum as it is a way of breaking the ice and getting people to start to communicate with each other. The answers will also help you to assess whether they are individuals who think and work in numbers, words or pictures. An important factor for a facilitator or mentor to determine so that they can deliver effective support.
