Late last night I was out on a walk. It was a chilly and clear evening and one could see all the stars in the sky.
The space and the stars have fascinated humans probably as long as we have been able to think and reflect on things. Watching the stars from below they seem so small, like you could hold them in your hand. They also seem to stand still although they are moving with a speed faster than we can imagine. Talking about imagine one has to admit that it fuels the imagination watching all those points of light out there. Is there life on any of them? Maybe not on one of those we see from Earth, but there are more solar systems beyond our own.
Standing still and watching the stars gives a feeling of them coming closer. You get a feeling of being a part of something bigger, being a part of all that is out there. Have you ever watched a painting very intensively, so that it feels like you are almost drawn into it? You can get the same feeling watching the stars in the sky.
This is in fact quite natural, because we are a part of all that is out there. The Earth is not separate from the Universe, but a part of it. That means that we humans also are a part of the Universe.
You can say we are space creatures. Our planet is surrounded by space in all directions, so this is completely natural.
I have become more and more fascinated by the space. If you think of how big and vast it is you have to realize how very small our planet really is. Thinking of this makes ones perspectives grow out of all boundaries.
It makes one realizing that reality is so much bigger than our human awareness can even imagine. We limit ourselves to a tiny, small, reality, while there is a BIG reality waiting for us if we are just able to see it.
There was a time when I thought it was a waste to send people out in the space, but realizing that space is not separate from our own reality made me change my mind. We can see the Earth as our home, but the Earth is a place in space which makes us inhabitants in the great Universe.
It is like you living in a city, a village or any smaller place, but you also live in a country and on a continent. Seeing yourself as an inhabitant in the Universe is just broadening your perspective and getting a bigger home.
One of the few men who have been to the moon is Edgar Mitchell. On the way back he saw the Earth from the space ship and realized it being a part of the vast Universe. Back on Earth he founded The Institute Of Noetic Sciences.
Since we are a part of the Universe learning more about the Universe is learning more about ourselves. Learning more about ourselves is an important part in developing and growing.
Travelling is one way of getting to see things from a new perspective, it can be said to provide a chance to experience and grow. Just by going by plane one gets a wholly different perspective of things than seeing them from the ground.
Maybe more of us will be flying out to the stars in the future, and not only watch them from the ground.
The Paralympics medalist and public speaker Randy Snow says that there are two kind of people, astronomers and astronauts. The astronomers sit down and watch the stars through their instruments. The astronauts says, I have to go there and then they go.
Tom Sorhannus is blogging and writing about exploring the inner and the outer world.

Voyagers of the Titanic $12.99 Late in the night of April 14, 1912, the mighty Titanic , a passenger liner traveling from Southampton, England, to New York City, struck an iceberg four hundred miles south of Newfoundland. Its sinking over the next two and a half hours brought the ship—mythological in name and size—one hundred years of infamy. Of the 2,240 people aboard the ship, 1,517 perished either by drowning or by freezing to death in the frigid North Atlantic waters. What followed the disaster was tantamount to a worldwide outpouring of grief: In New York, Paris, London, and other major cities, people lined the streets and crowded around the offices of the White Star Line, the Titanic ’s shipping company, to inquire for news of their loved ones and for details about the lives of some of the famous people of their time. While many accounts of the Titanic ’s voyage focus on the technical or mechanical aspects of why the ship sank, Voyagers of the Titanic follows the stories of the men, women, and children whose lives intersected on the vessel’s fateful last day, covering the full range of first, second, and third class—from plutocrats and captains of industry to cobblers and tailors looking for a better life in America. Richard Davenport-Hines delves into the fascinating lives of those who ate, drank, reveled, dreamed, and died aboard the mythic ship: from John Jacob Astor IV, the wealthiest person on board, whose comportment that night was subject to speculation and gossip for years after the event, to Archibald Butt, the much-beloved military aide to Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft, who died helping others into the Titanic ’s few lifeboats. With magnificent prose, Voyagers of the Titanic also brings to life the untold stories of the ship’s middle and third classes—clergymen, teachers, hoteliers, engineers, shopkeepers, counterjumpers, and clerks—each of whom had a story that not only illuminates the fascinating ship but also the times in which it sailed. In addition, Davenport-Hines explores the fascinating politics behind the Titanic ’s creation, which involved larger-than-life figures such as J. P. Morgan, the ship’s owner, and Lord Pirrie, the ship’s builder. The memory of this tragedy still remains a part of the American psyche and Voyagers of the Titanic brings that clear night back to us with all of its drama and pathos. |

Captives and Voyagers $15.95 Captives and Voyagers traces the departures, voyages, and landings of enslaved and free blacks who left their homelands in the eighteenth century for British colonies and examines how displacement and resettlement shaped migrant society and, in turn, Britain's Atlantic empire. Alexander X. Byrd focuses on the two largest and most significant streams of black dislocation: the forced migration of Africans from the Biafran interior of present-day southeastern Nigeria to Jamaica as part of the British slave trade and the journeys of free blacks from Great Britain and British North America to Sierra Leone in West Africa. By paying particular attention to the social and cultural effects of transatlantic migration on the groups themselves and focusing as well on their place in the British Empire, Byrd illuminates the meaning and experience of slavery and liberty for people whose movements were similarly beset by extreme violence and catastrophe. |

Voyagers II $4.99 Eighteen years ago, astronaut Keith Stoner had been the American member of a joint U.S.–Soviet mission to capture an alien ship that had entered the solar system. It was the greatest adventure in the history of Earth—but disaster struck when a bomb placed on the Soviet craft forced its recall. Stoner refused to return to Earth, staying behind in the strange ship alone where he fell into suspended animation. Jo Camerata, the ambitious young student who fell in love with Stoner, is now head of Vanguard Industries. Jo’s dogged determination has forced the recovery of the alien ship, and now her company is in control of the vast new technology—and in control of Keith Stoner. What Camerata doesn’t know, however, is that when Stoner wakes, someone else awakens, too. The alien presence in Stoner’s mind that has kept him alive all these years is now free, and intends to explore the world. And it will let nothing stand in its way. |

Voyagers III $4.99 Keith Stoner lay frozen in an alien spacecraft for fifteen long years; during that time he came to be something more than just an astronaut, just a man. Stoner became partly alien hismelf--merged with an alien intelligence embodied in the nanotechnology that lived inside Stoner's body. The alien whose tomb that spacecraft was, brought humanity both a blessing and a deadly peril. The technology now the control of Vanguard Industries has changed the face of the earth. The technology that lives in Stoner's bloodstream will change mankind forever. There are powerful leaders, both corporate and political, who are becoming aware of Keith Stoner and the power he seems to control. They want that power for themselves, and will do anything to gain it. Nothing Stoner can say or do will convince these ruthless men and women that the power they seek may destroy them utterly. |

Night Voyagers $3.95 He had "disappeared," Manuel's parents agreed. Many people disappeared these days. One instant they were where they should be: at work, or in their gardens, or walking down the street to buy a newspaper. And then suddenly they weren't anywhere. No one had seen them; sometime no one had heard anything about the. The stories of their lives just stopped, and remained unfinished. The way they vanished seemed worse than death itself. |
