Vintage Hallmark

Up until the mid eighteenth century, the British used a system for naming their architecture, furniture, and some of their decorative arts and crafts, including silver, by assigning to them a style designation from the time period or the reigning monarch. And thus styles were born. Namely, among them were Victorian, Elizabethan, William and Mary, Queen Anne, Georgian.

Georgian silver was first produced in the British Isles during the reigns of George I (1714 - 1727), George II (1727 - 1760), George III (1760 - 1820), and George IV (1820 - 1830). The main cities of origin were London, Birmingham, Chester, Dublin, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Newcastle, Norwich, Sheffield, and York. But the finest silver was produced in London. Prior to the Georgian era of silver production, fine silver was also produced during the reigns of Queen Anne (1702 - 1714), William and Mary (1689 - 1702), and in the Elizabethan times.

Queen Victoria's reign from 1837 to 1901, followed an over-a-century of Georgian silver production and it ushered in a sharp contrast in style, from the simple but well designed pieces of the Georgian period, to massive, elaborate, ornamental designs that some consider to be "too fussy!" Although there was a preponderance of silver produced in the Victorian era, the quality did not suffer, for it ranked equal in quality to that of the Georgian's century of production.

Georgian silver production was mainly tableware. It included flatware, coffee and teapots, creamers, sugar bowls. trays, salvers, serving dishes, sauce boats, and such as was related to the dining and living rooms of the house. The teapot, while being

one of the most standard of the Georgian silver pieces, can also be considered a measure of the Georgian silver market. A coffee jug created by Paul Storr is considered a work of art; a coffee pot made by the famed Hester Bateman was purchased in 1973 for $2,000.00. Pieces created by famed silversmiths of the era are highly prized by collectors.

Departing from its simplicity in design, Georgian silversmiths occasionally created elaborate pieces of silverware in the magnificent and highly ornamental silverware known as an epergne. One such piece made by Thomas Pitts of London was sold at auction in London in July, 1973, for $3,000.00. Two other highly important silversmiths of the era are Paul de Lamerie who worked in the early eighteenth century and John Schofield who worked in the latter eighteenth century.

Georgian silver can be positively identified by the hallmark as to maker, city of origin, and date made. Among collectibles in any field, few can be so positively identified. The value of a piece of British silver depends more upon its hallmark than upon any other single factor. As required by law, hallmarks are stamped on the silver by silversmiths and for any piece of silver to have an investment value the hallmark must be legible.

At the turn of this century when Georgian silver was selling at record prices many forgeries were perpetrated. One effective method of faking was to remove a piece of silver containing the "right" hallmark and graft it into the faked piece. Penalties for falsifying hallmarks have been extremely severe, and punishment is comparable to those for counterfeiting currency, and although forgeries still persist, the severity of the punishment may deter or keep it in check.

The value of a piece of Georgian silver is characterized by the following:

• Date of the piece
• Quality of the piece (well designed, "right' date)
• The maker
• Condition of the hallmark ( hallmark that has been over- cleaned reduces value; clear hallmark definitely adds to value)
• Condition of the piece (elaborate repairs reduces value)
• Weight of the piece
• Where piece was purchased
• City of Origin
• Excellent crests (an ordinary family crest neither adds nor diminish value, but an excellent crest, done sharply, does add to value)
• History (those which are purchased by prominent collectors and museums: an illustrious former owner, particular a member of the nobility or royalty
• Reference and particularly illustration, in a book by an authority on silver
• Display in an important exhibition of silver

The would-be-collector will become expert in judging the value and originality of Georgian silver the more he looks at it, and the more he discusses it with silver dealers.
