Wayside Harmony

Communication is the process of transferring information from one entity to another. This is a very clinical description but it pretty much hits the mark.

Amazing technological advances in the last decade have revolutionized the process of communication. In some ways this is an advantage, but in many ways, the important nuances of personal communication are falling by the wayside. And they are so important.

Personal and intimate communications are the theme of this article. How we learn to communicate to our family, friends, our co-workers and our 'circle of influence' is so important to peace and harmony in our world and on this planet.

In my website on self-esteem, I say that everything we do and say is based on how we feel about ourselves. How we communicate to one another also stems initially from how we feel about ourselves.

If we are not accepting of ourselves, and if we have a tendency to show the world someone different, we will communicate differently. For instance, my sister in law is pretty fast at criticism. My husband beats around the bush sometimes in order to prevent her onslaught. It never works, as her behavior pattern has no stop button. In the mean time, he has not really said what he wanted to say and has not gotten the results that he wanted to get.

When we are not confident in who we are, we often are afraid to ask for what we want and speak our minds on important matters. False confidence can also come across to others in a way that does not convey what was intended. We often fabricate the truth because we do not like how we are, or how things are. We also have preconceived ideas about how others will react to the truth and so we try to rearrange it to avoid telling it.

I believe that we need to make a priority of developing our self-esteem so that we can accept ourselves for who we are; the way we look, the talents that we do, or do not have, and all the other ways that we are human on this earth.

We need to believe in ourselves as children of a greater Source. In that, we would know how unique and intended we are in the world.

We would then allow ourselves to be vulnerable to the people close to us; enough to let them know all about us so that we no longer need to show a facade to them and to the world.

If the sister that berates her family loved and accepted herself, there would no longer be a pay-off for criticizing and berating the people around her.

The ultimate scenario is that we would be able to tell the truth all of the time and be strong enough to stand up for ourselves if needed. After all, is not good communication only about telling the truth? Easier said than done?
