If things go according to plan, advances in parabolic solar collectors, could soon make the idea of solar operated homes a normal occurrence rather than the oddity that it is now.
MIT students and researchers have been working on a new design for parabolic solar collectors that are able to extract amazing amounts of energy from the sun at an incredibly rapid rate. Think of focusing the sunlight through a hand held magnifying glass. Focused correctly, it will eventually make tinder burst into flame. Now, focus that same beam of sunlight though one of these newly designed parabolic solar collectors. Instead of waiting minutes for the tinder to catch flame, you will wait only seconds. This is the promise of how fast this new solar technology threatens to make the old solar technologies obsolete.
Technically, this new technology is still in the research stage. Students and researchers at MIT are refining and improving their working models. The rate of improvement has grown so rapidly, however, that it seems only a matter of time before the technology is unleashed on the world. In addition to being a vast improvement over previous ways of collecting solar energy such as voltaic panels, the design is deceptively simple and the cost is extremely inexpensive. In essence the parabolic solar collector consists of a ten foot frame built of aluminum tubes with mirrors attached.
If the new technology takes off, it won't be too soon for the millions of potential customers who have been waiting to take advantage of the promise of solar technology for years but who have been put off by the long payback periods of the technology. In the proper areas, i.e. those with a lot of sunlight, it has been long recognized that solar energy installed in a home can pay back the average homeowner in about a period of ten years. The problem that stops most people is the huge upfront fee needed to pay for the solar panels and installation.
If, however, the upfront costs could be decreased significantly. And, if the payback time could be reduced as well - upgrading to a solar based house could easily become a no-brainer. And this is what the new parabolic solar collector technology promises.
Renewable forms of energy have been a popular topic of conversation among politicians for many years. Unfortunately, at the national level, there have been only tepid attempts to motivate the American population towards adopting solar or other forms of energy. With the new advances at MIT and other places, however, the government may not be needed once knowledge of the new technologies reaches the general population and they begin to demand to see it in the marketplace.
Solar power is fast becoming a viable energy resource. For more info on solar panel electricity, solar hot water panel, and other solar power related articles, please see our website.

Danger in the Wind $13.13 A fine summer in 100 AD and good government under Trajan Caesar promise well for the Roman settlers in the frontier province of Britannia. At a small fort near York, Jovina, a senior officer's wife, invites her cousin Aurelia Marcella to a midsummer birthday party. June is a busy time at Aurelia's inn, but she accepts the invitation because Jovina's letter includes a desperate plea for help, referring to "danger in the wind." Aurelia assumes the danger arises from some family or personal quarrel, because the fort itself is in a peaceful district...or is it? On the day the letter arrives, a soldier staying at the inn is murdered in his bed. He was carrying a cryptic message indicating violence is about to erupt at Jovina's fort, on the very day of her party. Aurelia learns that what was once a quiet village attached to a dull military base has become a potential trouble spot, thanks to an unpopular tax collector and native tribesmen who hate the Roman occupation. But she knows she can't desert her cousin in a dangerous situation, and makes the journey. She finds Jovina and her drunken husband and unruly children caught in a tangled web of greed, love, death, and political intrigue. When violence engulfs the district, Aurelia herself is in peril from enemies determined to stop her unravelling the twisted strands of a serious anti-Roman conspiracy. The fourth in the Aurelia Marcella Series. |
