Moving, whether across town or across the country, can be a stressful time. Here are some tips for making it go as smooth as possible.
Choose the right company
When talking to movers ask the right questions. Find out how they assess fees and what types of payment they accept. Be cautious of any that only accept cash. Ask whether an associate will visit your home to complete a visual survey of your home before providing an estimate. Inquire into whether they offer both binding and nonbinding contracts and discuss which will work best for your circumstances. Confirm that the quote includes extra charges such as potential parking charges or for long carries. Make sure you know whether they expect your property will have to be transferred en route, which increases the likelihood of damage. Find out their process for handling losses and damage and how that differs if you choose to pack yourself. Know what insurance is provided and what upgrades are available. Before purchasing additional insurance, contact your homeowners insurance provider to determine what coverage you already have.
Choose the right services
Before you sign a contract with a moving company, you will need to make sure they provide all of the services you need. Work with the associate who comes to survey your home to determine the scope of the work required and how much of it you want them to do and what tasks you want to take on yourself. Do you want them pack everything or just heavy objects like appliances? Do you want them to assist with disassembly or reassembly of furniture and wall units? Do you need them to make arrangements to store some or all of your belongings for a short time while you complete work on your home? Do you have heavy objects like a piano that can't be disassembled and need to be hoisted through a window? Do you need the movers to dispose of leftover trash? All of these services may incur additional fees.
Plan ahead for packing
If you choose to do some of all of the packing yourself, be sure to inquire into the moving service's guidelines. It is likely that they have specific standards for proper packing such as using sturdy cartons and filling them so that they do not bulge outward. You'll need to plan plenty of time to acquire the correct amount of boxes and pack them correctly. Make sure you know whether self-packed items are treated any differently under the insurance coverage. Also be sure to ask about policies in regards to transport of food. Finally, keep in mind that moving companies will not transport plants or pets so you will need to make arrangements to carry these in your personal vehicle.

How Big Is Your God? $17.99 "How Big Is Your God? Is He big enough? The great life lesson we should pass on to others is that of having confidence in a God who is big enough for whatever life brings-being tired of eating bologna, having a daughter run away from home, being accused of stealing ministry funds, driving the tan van that wouldn't die, and much more. The Robinsons' memoirs illustrate God's bigness and faithfulness through over forty years of children's ministry in western Canada. What they said..."It's kind of hard to express thanks to someone who changed my life and way of thinking. I've never grown as much in the Lord as when I had you both as an example and guide as a Christian team willing to serve each other and the Lord." Walter Selke (Healing Hearts Ministry, Regina)"I can't begin to explain what you've meant to me. As my spiritual father, you've disciplined me; as my leader, you've led me; and as my teacher, you've taught me. But most of all, you have been my friend." Don Cameron (Yellowknife)"It sure was good to see someone so dedicated to God's work. Thanks for the example." Dave Bunn (missionary, France)"The Lord has used you in my life to change me and teach me many things. I have greatly appreciated you and just how God chooses to use you the way He does." Rod Nikkel (saddle tree maker and church elder)"I don't know how to tell you how much you mean to me. You have helped me grow so much in my Christian life over the years, and I am very grateful to you." Diane Krause"Thank you so much for loving us counselors and praying for us. What a precious summer this has been Thank you for teaching us the importance of having faith in the facts of God's Word." Dorothy Reid (missionary, Romania)"It has been one of the best summers I've spent working under you both. It has been an experience that won't be soon forgotten. Our God's pretty big " Seaweed (camp nickname)About the Author: Jerry & Connie Robinson have worked in a variety of children's ministries in western Canada for over forty years. From fifteen dozen eggs to 4500 postage stamps, the Robinsons seek to share their experiences of a big God at work during the challenges of ministry and family life. Their stories have impacted and encouraged many others who are just starting out on their journeys. They make their home in Calgary, Alberta and have four adult children." |

The Big Ripoff: How Big Business and Big Government Steal Your Money $20.5 Praise for THE BIG RIPOFF "Politicians like to say that government is on the side of the little guy. But with impressive documentation and persuasive examples, Tim Carney shows how government power and regulation are typically used to assist the powerful." -Paul A. Gigot Editorial Page Editor, the Wall Street Journal "Exposes the dirty little secret of American politics: how big businesses work with statist politicians to diminish the prosperity and freedom of consumers, taxpayers, and entrepreneurs. Carney employs top-notch writing ability, passion for liberty, and understanding of economics to demolish the myth that big business is a foe of big government. Everyone who seeks to understand who really benefits from big government should read this book, as should anyone who still believes that the interventionist state benefits the average person." -Congressman Ron Paul U.S. House of Representatives, 14th District of Texas "Small entrepreneurial businesses are the backbone success of our great economy. They are the biggest job and wealth creators. Is that why big corpocratic behemoth firms collude with big government for a liberal agenda of higher taxes and overregulation that will punish the small risk-takers? Tim Carney's new book describes how anti-business big business can be." -Lawrence Kudlow Host of CNBC's Kudlow & Company "Tim Carney explodes the myth that big business and big government are natural opponents. All too often, as he points out, they're both engaged in a common enterprise: picking your pocket." -Ramesh Ponnuru Senior Editor, National Review "A romping tour de force of the love affair between big business and big government from Teddy Roosevelt and the Robber Barons to Enron and the Kyoto Treaty. Indispensable for understanding how government regulation really works." -Donald Devine Grewcock Professor of Political Science, Bellevue University "Every CEO in America should read this book today, issue new directives to their bureaucrat-appeasing Washington lobbyist tomorrow, and join in the fight for economic liberalization." -Fred L. Smith, Jr. Founder and President, Competitive Enterprise Institute |
